MitoFlip
MitoFlip is an interactive popup book designed in collaboration with Liqid for the Alfa Romeo Mito.
Mito Flip was designed to portray the true character of the Alfa Romeo Mito of being youthful and energetic and at the same time increasing the market presence and the brand value of the car.
3D projection Mapping + iPad app + Popup book = A really fun project!
The Goal
Our goal was to create an eye catching and portable physical installation to help promote the Alfa Romeo Mito brand better. The result of extensive research and brainstorming was the interactive popup book that could be easily carried by the people at Alfa Romeo to advertise the car.
My Role
In a team with three other Interaction designers my key activities involved:
- Ideation and concept generation
- Problem setting and market research
- User experience of the product
- Building the actual popup book form scratch
- Prototyping
- Figuring out the various physical Interactions on the prototype
- Concept presentation
How it works
The Interactive popup book combines 3D projection mapping with a popup book and all connected together with the app on the iPad inside the book depicting a road in the city and also act as lighting for the interiors of the buildings.
The pop up book consists of multiple pages. Every time you open a page, the related 3D projection starts playing and you can interact further with the iPad inside the book to trigger other projections.

Initial prototyping and testing
We explored how the light from an iPad reacts with the paper in the popup book. This helped us select the right materials to build the popup book. We also did some initial prototyping with 3D projection mapping exploring how well it would display on paper.
Exploring the emotions that describe Mito
We explored the various emotions that go with the different colours of the Mito and found related interactive examples symbolising each of them.
